The following is an excerpt taken from the book Dead Man Walking and it involves Bill Quigley, a local attorney and his young son. ‘Patrick has asked why people wanted to kill Mr. Sonnier. “Because they say he killed people,” Bill had answered. ‘But, Dad, then who is going to kill them for killing him?” (60)
Do you believe that government should engage in the killing of criminals? Do you
believe the state has the right to say who lives and who dies?

I do believe that our country should use capital punishment. After the flood, God Himself instituted capital punishment. "Whoever sheds the blood of man,by man shall his blood be shed,for God made man in his own image." (Gen. 9:6)This isnt part of the OT law we dont follow anymore in Exodus, etc. While some say that cap. punishment disregards the fact that man was made in God's image, Genesis says it upholds this fact by showing how serious murder is. The movie we watched mentioned that the death penalty shouldnt be used b/c the NT talks about grace and reconciliation. I don't think severe punishment of criminals and grace have to contradict each other, and grace definetly doesnt mean just letting condemned prisoners off the hook. The grace we tell prisoners awaiting death about should not be the grace and forgivness of the government, but the grace Christ purchased on the cross and that He offers them if they repent and trust in Him.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with Billy and do not believe that the government should use capital punishment. The Old Testament presents many laws and values that were refuted by Jesus in the New Testament and should not be taken literally. A fundamentalist interpretation of the Bible should not be applied to contemporary issues regarding capital punishment. By not applying capital punishment in cases, we are not letting prisoners off the hook but instead using a more humane form of punishment while still protecting the other citizens of our country and the world.
ReplyDeleteI agree that our country should not use capital punishment. It should not be up to the government to decide when people die. God knows when it is our time to go and he should be the one making the decision when we return to heaven and live with Him forever. I agree with what Ryan said that by not using capital punishment we are not letting criminals off the hook. These criminals still have to stay in jail until they die, so it is not letting them off the hook and it is a much more humane way to deal with these people.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both Ryan and Will and believe that the government should not engage in the killing of criminals because if we are killing people that have killed others, what does that make us. You can't fight fire with more fire. Plus, the state has no say over when our time to go is, that is up to God and God alone.
